For travelers whose idea of a great trip includes cannabis, choosing the right destination means more than beaches, food, or nightlife.
WEEDAR analyzed popular global destinations based on cannabis legality, cost per gram, penalties for small possession, and local use rates to rank the world’s best spots for travelers who like to indulge.
Here are the top places that made the list.
1. Canada

Canada tops the list as one of the most weed-friendly countries in the world. Recreational cannabis is fully legal across Canada, and you can carry up to 30 grams without penalty. Consumption rules vary by province and municipality.
Prices average around $7 per gram, making cannabis relatively affordable compared with many destinations. Annual cannabis use in Canada is among the highest in the world, showing how normal weed is in daily life there.
Vancouver and Toronto offer easy access to legal dispensaries with urban attractions, while lakes and mountains offer a scenic setting for an elevated experience.
2. Mexico

Mexico ranks high for cannabis travelers because personal possession up to 28 grams is decriminalized, and penalties for small amounts are nonexistent.
You can carry up to 28 grams without legal repercussions. For an average cost of $7.90 per gram, cannabis is quite affordable.
Mexico’s culture, beaches, and archaeological sites all complement a relaxed weed experience. However, while personal possession is decriminalized, only part of the local population views it favorably, meaning cultural acceptance can vary by region and crowd.
3. Australia

Australia is a unique travel option for canna-enthusiasts. Its cannabis laws vary by region but are generally partly legal or decriminalized.
In the Australian Capital Territory, small amounts (up to 50 grams) can be possessed for personal use, and enforcement outside the ACT varies by state and territory, particularly for small amounts.
At about $10.10 per gram, cannabis is pricier, but the laid-back cannabis culture and active use make Australia appealing. Wildlife, natural landmarks, beaches, and cities add more to the experience beyond weed.
Despite federal laws that technically prohibit recreational use, travelers report fewer penalties for small amounts in certain regions.
4. Italy

Cannabis has been decriminalized in Italy, so small amounts won’t lead to jail time, but you may get a warning. Usage rate is lower than in other destinations, and the average cost of about $9.50 per gram keeps it accessible.
Italy’s rich culture, culinary delights, and architecture make it a standout destination even beyond its cannabis scene. Cities such as Rome, Florence, and Milan offer visitors a chance to explore world history and design, and embracing cannabis while wandering the country can feel like part of the experience.
With relatively relaxed possession rules, cannabis tourists who are mindful of local guidelines can enjoy cultural landmarks and the local herb without much risk. Penalties can include confiscation or temporary suspension of documents, not jail.
5. Netherlands

The Netherlands has been a worldwide symbol of weed culture for decades. Cannabis remains illegal but is tolerated for small amounts, and visitors have come for years to enjoy the famous coffee shops where cannabis is sold openly.
At about $9.60 per gram, cannabis isn’t the cheapest globally, but the open legal environment and cannabis-centered attractions, from cafes to museums and festivals, make places like Amsterdam an obvious choice for cannabis tourism.
Amsterdam’s coffee shop scene gives travelers a unique atmosphere where cannabis consumption and socializing are combined. Beyond weed, the city has a fun nightlife, historic stops like the Anne Frank House, and canals that make sightseeing memorable.
6. Thailand

Cannabis was decriminalized in Thailand, though recent regulations have moved to restrict recreational use, particularly in public settings.
Cannabis prices are high here, partly due to growing tourist demand. Cities like Bangkok and Chiang Mai now have dispensaries and shops where you can explore local strains.
What’s interesting about Thailand is how fast its cannabis scene has shifted from one of the strictest drug law regimes in the world to one that has rapidly shifted toward regulated and more restricted use.
